How it works

How to calculate it

The calculator applies the values you enter to this formula:

Tiles = surface area × (1 + waste rate) ÷ tile area.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the surface dimensions.
  2. Enter the actual tile length and width.
  3. Apply a layout-based waste percentage and material price.

Worked example

A 20 × 15 ft surface using 12-inch square tiles with 12% waste requires 336 tiles.

Important assumptions

  • Grout-joint area is not deducted.
  • Tiles are assumed to have uniform dimensions.
  • Labor, mortar, grout, and edge pieces are excluded.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing tile inches with surface feet.
  • Ignoring cuts around edges and fixtures.
  • Treating the raw tile count as a purchasable box count.

Method reviewed June 10, 2026. Prices and rates are user-provided defaults and should be replaced with local values.
