How it works

How to calculate it

The calculator applies the values you enter to this formula:

Sod area = length × width × (1 + waste rate); pallets = sod area ÷ pallet coverage.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the net lawn area.
  2. Add cutting waste for the site shape.
  3. Replace the pallet coverage default with the farm's figure.

Worked example

A 20 × 15 ft lawn with 5% waste requires 315 sq ft, normally one pallet at 450 sq ft per pallet.

Important assumptions

  • The lawn is rectangular.
  • Pallet coverage varies by farm and sod type.
  • Soil preparation, delivery, and installation are excluded.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every pallet covers the same area.
  • Ignoring curves and narrow strips.
  • Scheduling delivery before the site is ready.

Method reviewed June 10, 2026. Prices and rates are user-provided defaults and should be replaced with local values.
